What the exchange taught me

/* para versão em português, clique aqui. */

Everybody who have studied abroad to whom I asked for advice before I went to Groningen agreed in one point: doing an exchange is something that teaches lots of things.

To me, personally, taught to see the world and the persons in it in a very different way, much closer, much more concrete, much more marvellous; the world became smaller and bigger at the same time. Smaller because I had contact with things and people that were very far away before, and now I feel them close. Bigger because I thought I knew things before, but now that I really know more I realized for real the world has so many things to be seen and discovered and known, and I feel ashamed of the times when I arrogantly assumed I knew shit; we all know so little, and we are equal in our ignorance.

It taught me also one or two things about what does it mean to enjoy life. Is it true that we have to do expensive stuff or grand stuff or nice-to-post-to-facebook stuff to feel we are having a life worth living? Or, instead, the best moments were those when we were with people we like, talking, exchanging ideas, simply building connections with other human beings? This question is tough, and I haven't been able to digest it trough yet. When I tell my friends how many countries I visited during my stay in Europe, I feel that they think (or I project on them what I internally think myself - and in the end it doesn't really matter, either way it is something I have to overcome as a person) I haven't enjoyed fully, but how to make them understand how PRECIOUS were the days and nights I spent with my friends?

Still on the same topic, the year that passed made think and rethink a lot of things about the future, about carrer, money, success. What is the point after which we should stop having the discipline to do something we don't like but that will bring us good things in the future and start doing more stuff now that brings us good things now? Is there a middle way that allows us to conciliate present and future? I don't mean that we should surrender ourselves to mundane pleasures and fuck our health by doing so, but doesn't it make sense to think that an experience we have today will change us in such a way we will see the world and our subsequent experiences differently? Thinking like that, living the now and searching for new sensations is not recklessness, it is actually a long-term investment.

But I had not become a hippie, because the exchange also taught me that what makes lying in your bed and reading a book at night soooo good is the sensation of having had a productive day, and therefore not having the guilt of procrastination looming over your head.

The exchange put me in touch with people I would have never met otherwise. Many of those people became special, to the point of making me realize that they, before being "people I met during exchange", are simply "people". The friendships I built this year are not souvenirs from my trip to Europe, they are consequence of the impact I had on the lives of the people that had impact in my life. And even though I think this is one of the most important points I wanted to cover, I can't explain better.

What the exchange in Groningen did not teach me was how to handle this emotional luggage, this whole connection I have with the people I met and loved. Last year, when I was going, I had no idea whatsoever of how painful a simple "I miss you" could be, when you are not in the range of a hug, when you can't just go downstairs to be close again. It is confusing, but this "missing" and nostalgia feelings can be felt almost as physical pain.

Maybe that is the last lesson from the exchange, the fact that some things we don't understand and never learn how to handle. The pain of splitting is the price to pay for the privilege of bonding.

O que o intercâmbio me ensinou

/* for english version, click here. */

Future

/* Para versão em português, clique aqui. */

Happy New Year, passangers of this crazy spaceship I named Flying Dutchman! The events on batavian lands keep going the same track as usual: make me learn a lot, make me re-learn a lot, and most of all keep showing me that the set of things I know is countable, while the set of things I don't know... this one is uncountable, and infinite in ways that would make the Real Numbers Set jealous.

I haven't written as much as I imagined I would have at first. The reason is not lack of topics, actually the stack of topics about which I would like to talk about is always getting higher and higher, much faster than my typing skills would allow me to write. The reason is that a topic in particular have been poping up in my mind much more frequently than any other, and it is about that that I want to talk now.

What do you want for your life? I am sorry I ask this question like that, without preparation, but I couldn't think in any way to soften the impact. And it is like that the question comes to me, urgent, as if my future depends on its answer.

When I was in Liberato, highschool with technical studies in Electronics, between 2008 and 2012, the future presented itself clearly: I would finish highschool, find a job in the technical area, work during the day and go to college during the night. The salary would be good, not awesome but more than enough to cover food and living expenses, some extra to buy books, etc. What would I be studying? Something technical, maybe an engineering, something envolving Mathematics but with good salary expectation.

That sounded perfect to me then. But now... I don't know.

I consider myself super lucky for not having to think about a job as if it was something to prevent me from starving. My parents always worked very hard so my family would never lack the necessary, and even though I have never had the best toys (or, later, the equivalent of best toys for the teenagers and young adults), our fruit basket was always full. So this text may sound to you as a spoiled child crying, so be it. One of the countless doubts I have now is if it is so much necessary that everybody accept suffering as an inevitable part of life.

I want to have a job that satisfies me as a human being. The idea of working/studying the whole year waiting for the vacation period, the whole week waiting for Friday, the whole day waiting for the time we go home... This idea depresses me. In the books of Isaac Asimov he very frequently talks about a future when science and technology frees people from boring jobs, so everybody have free time to spend doing stuff they really love. Is too soon to want something like that?

In my specific case, studying Computer Science, my fear is to become someone's employee, working in a project that does not inspires me at all, to get "higher" in the company and have money which I will not have the time to spend. Being able to buy books, but never relaxed enough to enjoy them.

I like to finish my posts with some sort of conclusion, and in the beginning of this one I expected to end up having some sort of insight during the process of writing, but miracles don't happen. And, in a post I started talking about not knowing stuff, nothig more coherent than finishing without conclusion.

Lucky ones those who know what the future has to them.

Futuro

/* For english version, click here. */

/* for english version, click here */

Voltei.

Relaxando no fim do mundo. Impressionante.
Exercícios físicos e ver coisas novas me inspiram pra fazer mais coisas diferentes.

Tomatinhos, vagem, arroz, batata frita e bife.

At first the main idea for this blog wasn't to be a culinary blog. But ideas change, and when one has something important or relevant to share one doesn't care and shares it, even if it is about cooking. That culinary can be something important or relevant is, as a matter of fact, an idea that still amazes me, and was one of the many surprises of this year. But let's face the facts, against which there is no arguments.

I was feeling kind of blue in the past few days. I have read a lot on internet about sadness being part of life, and not necessarily a bad thing; sometimes it is important to feel sad. The problem is when we don't know the reason for the sadness - then it is a pain in the ass. If you know the bad smell you are feeling is a gas leak in the kitchen, you just have to go to the kitchen and end the leak; but what happens if you don't notice the source of the bad smell and tries to purify the air lighting a perfumed candle?

Anyway, I was feeling kind of blue, and decided to do some physical exercise and see some different places, in the hope that that would help to enlighten my mood. I took my favourite bike (because now I have 3, never ever again I want to be in the situation of having a bike stolen and being left on foot) and hit the road. The idea was to try to get to the North Sea in the shortest time possible. (For register sake: even though some people told me it would take almost 2h to get there, I got there in 1h15). I got there, found a comfortable spot in the grass atop the dyke protecting The Netherlands from an eventual rise in the sea level and spent some time alone with my thoughts. Then I came back.

Chilling in the end of the world. I am lying in the dyke, a huge man-made protection against the sea, stretching apparently forever in both directions. Very impressive.
Physical exercise and seeing different things inspire me to do more different things. And besides that, I was hungry enough to eat a cow by her leg (sorry, this makes much more sense in Portuguese) with what all the effort of pedalling the 25km and back always trying to go faster. And somehow going there and spending that time alone reminded me of the past, playing in the courtyard of my house and stuff. The logical answer was then making a dish I never tried before, which is very brazilian despite the name being kind of french: à la minuta.

On the way home I dropped by in the supermarket and talked to the butcher until I was completely convinced that beef he gave me was the same my mother used to cook when I was a child. And here a parenthesis about the price: two little pieces of beef costs 6 euros. That is more or less 22 euros by kg. This is R$67,00(!!!). In other words: I could not by any means screw anything up and in the end have to throw it all away. That is why I called the specialists.

I talked to my mom via Skype for 15 minutes so she could explain to me and to Iris - my friend from Spain whose assistance I requested in order to decrease the chance of failure and according to whom the Portuguese of my mother is much easier to understand than mine - how to make à la minuta. Instructions given, we started the actual work.

For those of you interested on my mother's receipt, it is as follows (and this time there is no chinese girl laughing of the fact that I eat cereal for dinner, because I don't do that anymore; there are, however, one argentinian guy who gives napkins and one indian guy who approves the french fries):

First of all put in a plate the beefs to be prepared. If they are not beaten up (to be softened), do yourself the job. Chop two cloves of garlic and spice the beefs with the chopped garlic as well with as much salt as you think is ok. Let both pieces of dead cow waiting in the plate.
Peel some potatoes off and chop them, in such a way the pieces are not too much smaller than a healthy littlefinger. After preparing the potatoes you can start cooking the rice and heating up the skillet. When the oil in the skillet is hot enough, put the chopped potatoes there taking care to not let them burn.
In paralel (paralel cooking is a very recent acquired skill) put a tad of oil in another pan, with a pinch of sugar (to give colour to the thing). Put the beefs in it and keep turning them, being very very careful so you don't have to sell your kidneys to buy more. After 4 to 5 minutes (according to the butcher) the beefs should be ready. It is time to add the half an onion you forgot to chop beforehand. You chop it at the speed of light and put it together with the beef. Let the onion have a good time with the beefs and then it is done. By now the french fries are already in the plate (properly covered with the napkin of the argentinian and properly approved by the indian). The rice too, or maybe it will take some more minutes.

After all that, we prepared the table, I took some pictures because it was too beautiful to miss the opportunity, and we started to eat as if eating were a thing that keeps us alive.
I don't usually boast about my cooking skills, because fried chicken and rice are easy, my pasta with chicken and tomato sauce has some unfortunate gastrointestinal side effects and my lentil has so far 50% success rate, but this time, with the help of the mentioned people, I did it right. The dish in my humble opinion was 2 salt pinches from culinary perfection. That was not a meal, that was a spiritual experience transcending palate, it was a time travel back to the peaceful times of my childhood, when the morning cartoon was over and I knew the lunch was about to start, and suddenly I am at table with my father and my mother, it is noon, the light enters through the window reflected in the brickwall of the school beside my house and filtered by the plaid curtains with knitted borders that my mother knitted herself, the tiles in the kitchen also feel like childhood, a warm wind lazily enters through the open door in the laundry following our dog Tasmania (she were named by my father, who liked exotic names; we also had another one named Pretoria), in the background it is possible to hear the high volume of the sound of my grandmother's television, perennially tuned on Silvio Santos or Raul Gil, the television and my grandmother, who at that time already couldn't hear very well, and also was possible to hear the children playing and running in the school, and the neighbour's parrot randomly shouting curses, and at the table there was the fluffy rice, the beef with onions and the french fries, crunchy outside and soft inside, and everything is so perfect and peaceful that I go as far as to tell Iris I am about to cry. And all of a sudden I am back to the present, the plate is empty and I have the sensation of having been transported very far in at least 4 dimensions.

Small tomatoes, the green thing that I don't know the name in english, rice, french fries, beef. To be a complete à la minuta still would be necessary fried eggs and black beans, but it was awesome like this anyway.
It is likely I won't be able to repeat the experience, because the whole thing depends on my state of mind. I can only say that cooking not only is funny, but also sometimes can be very therapeutic.

Tot ziens!

PS: a message to Me From The Past: fuck you with all this bullshit about the juice from the meat. The fact is that the juice you like to put over the rice is not something easy that depends on the person cooking, it is a personal matter between the cow and the pan, there is nothing much to be done about it. This time the juice was there, but how my mother made to have those luxuriant amounts of juice is still among the Inscrutable Mysteries of My Existence. Best regards, You In The Future.

About living and stuff

/* para versão em português, clique aqui */

It has been a while since last time I wrote something about this crazy year, and for various reasons, depending on which period we are talking about. At first, when I was on vacation, I simply would not know what to write about and even if I knew I would not be able to because that is not how my inspiration works. I need agitation to get ideas, and I need lack of time to get will enough to write. What leads me to the second reason: as soon as the vacation was over, everything started happening so fast that I couldn't at all stop and write. But now things are relatively calm and that's why I am here again.

Last week took place here the ESN Introduction Week, where the new international students that arrived for the next academic year are introduced to this little piece of heaven called Groningen. Who organizes it is the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) of Groningen, but as there are a lot of new students - this year we had 1200 (!), and it is said that this makes Groningen the city with the biggest introduction week of all Europe (!!) - they need help. And I, whose superpower is admittedly being totally INCAPABLE of not being around the things happening, enlisted myself to help.

The activities are planned basicly to know the city, play some sports and learn new things, but the main focus is to get to know people. The students are split in groups, and each group has two guides. In my case, I and Alex were the guides of the group #62. The week personifies (to "personify" it would have to be a person, what I should have used in this case?) the spirit of the exchange: to live fully. But, of course, that could mean anything, and that is why I am going to elongate myself on this subject.

For many times I tried to start a text trying to explain what has changed in my perception of what is "the best", of what is "preferable" when we are talking about living. Never denying a party or staying home to watch a movie? Even now, in this paragraph, which when arrives to your mind will be in the final version, I can say now that is being really difficult to write too.

It is hard to write because is not a simple matter. And whoever says it is, is lying. It is not simply a question of "being prepared for the future" vs. "enjoying the moment", how it was in grandma's time. It is not "responsible" vs. "irresponsible" either, or maybe it is a little...
It is more like allowing yourself to be spontaneous, of choosing whatever path will unleash more emotion and memory, of doing whatever you most want. It is a complete waste living a day that will not be remembered, and we still do that most of the time anyway. So maybe the right question is "what makes a day memorable?"

When I first came here, I thougt I would travel the entire Europe, that I would know all of the touristic points of the world, eat all traditional dishes and take selfies in front of every major statue. But the reality is different, the money is not endless, and one thing that I noticed in a trip I did to Belgium with some friends is that the important part of the phrase "a trip I did to Belgium with some friends" is not "a trip I did to Belgium" and actually is "with some friends". Every important moment I can remember I just can do so because of who were with me, and not because of where I was. And the traditional food anywhere in Europe, so far as I know, is kebab.

That doesn't mean that being with friends in Belgium is not better than being with friends at home, it depends... and oh, how this is so deliciously complicated.

I did not start this text intending to give any conclusions to this matter, and probably will take a huge amount of time until I figure something out. And after that I will still change my mind some times.

The fact is, whatever is the idea, last week personifies it (yes, it is strange to use personify here, but we've been through that already). I knew a lot of people, people nice a lot, got surprised by how the variety in a group contributes largely to the cohesion and success of the group (and someday I will write about that... I have my own matheological on that, and I strongly think they should create something like a sociodynamics, just like eletrodynamics, hidrodynamics, etc., and if someone know something about that, please let me know), took some different workshops, played some sports I didn't even knew what were about before. The week were for the new students, but I as a guide enjoyed it very much.

What I can say of positive is that discovering what I am trying to discover is difficult, but everything points out that once discovered, is easy to live by that. And is not necessary money, it doesn't have to be in some very different place. The world is full of interesting things, and lots of them are near us, wherever we are.

Unles you are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In this particular case, there is nothing interesting in a radius of many kilometers.

It is possible to find all kinds of crazy people in the world. In the picture, Group #62.

Our badass team of Lacrosse. We also played Floorball and Squash, none of which I knew a heck about; however, after five minutes into playing Squash, we were all talking business and discussig the Stock Market. Next step is to make business while playing golf.

As novidades e viver

/* fpr english version, click here */

Time badass de Lacrosse.

Anatomy of an international student

// Para versão em português, clique aqui. //

A kind of creature that wanders around the streets of Groningen and of most universitary cities I have heard about, speaking loud during inconvenient time, ignoring local holidays and asking for help in english to random people in the city center, are the international students. Where do they live? What do they eat? How can they adminstrate the money in such a way that after all the drinking and partying they still have enough to buy bread, cheese and salami?

First of all, as is usual for me, it is good to highlight the fact that in everything there are a lot of sides, and no international student is like the others. But because of the unicity of its members, this community ends up having some general characteristics that, more or less, apply to all of its members. Except when they don't. You got the idea.
To understand this creature it is necessary to understand that they have lots of contradictions. Every international student is continuously searching for the new, the new knowledge, the new thing, the new experience, for that new sensation he or she never had. And is always spicing those things with the old: all the stuff they used to do in their countries, the food they ate, the kinds of places they went to. In the end, even the things they were already used to are different, because they are with different people, in a different place - in my case, in a different hemisphere.
The international student wants always to know more about their friends' countries, how is the culture there, how to pick up girls in that country and, most of all, how one can say f*ck you on theirs friends' native language.
They most probably are not going to just shut up and listen, of course, they are going to share all about their own country, and are going to have a very good time listening to their friends cursing each other without knowing what they are saying. I had a lot of help of the world in this, because with all the World Cup thing the Brazil became a frequent subject and finally more people know we speak Portuguese and less people com to me saying "Hola, buenos días muchacho!". I know most of my friends cities because of their Happy videos (videos singing and dancing the music Happy), and they know Porto Alegre because of the World Cup propaganda.

(my fellows from Novo Hamburgo, please don't hate me! I love my city, but there is not so much to say after I have already said a) Novo Hamburgo is 40km away from Porto Alegre, b) Jorge's Tire Shop is there, c) it was named after Hamburg, in Germany [then one brief explanation about the european colonization in the south of Brazil and why I don't "look brazilian"] and d) it is a quiet place where the Art moved to and the shoe's Fenac is our pride.)

Most of the international students, yet, don't turn down a party or at least a pre-drinking in the blue kitchen. I mean, except when the exams are getting close, because then everybody enters a state where the fuel is the coffee and the goal is to learn everything possible. Opinions will diverge about how close is close enough to despair, but everybody have to study some time.

Did I forget something? Yes or absolutely sure? Write on the comments what is missing :)

Anatomia de um estudante internacional

// For english version, click here. //

Onde vivem?

Pegaram a ideia.

Deixei passar alguma coisa? Sim ou com certeza? Escreve nos comentários o que falta :)

Tot ziens!

Despedida

// For english version, scroll down. //

Title: Farewell

We, the bloggers, pursue originality in our texts. To talk about things people usually don't talk about, or at least to present a point of view slightly (or schizophrenically) different from what we are all used to. That is, of course, not always possible. The reason is that we bloggers are also human beings, and we have been through the same things that other human beings have, and one special thing that exists since the world is the world (and I am not talking about prostitution), and about what bloggers have been talking about since bloggers started talking, is the farewell.

All the suspense in the previous paragraph is pointless because I already have spoiled the surprise in the title. Anyway.

The academic year is coming to an end, and therefore a lot of exchange programmes are also being finished. And that means on the international students' lifes it is time to start packing things and saying goodbye to a lot of good friends. As I said, there are millions of texts about that on the internet, but even so... it seems to me that is not enough. The feeling is way bigger than that.

Because everytime we gather, "we" are less persons. Each new party, someone more is missing, someone is already back to his/her country and is already posting joyful photos with their old friends, with moms and dads happy to see that against all odds their babies have not turned into potheads. And stronger than that is the conscious of having a lot of "last times".
The last time we drink a beer together. The last relaxed moment in the chilling room. The last reggae session in De Zolder with everybody there. The last time we say we are going to meet at the entrance gate in five minutos. The last time we get there ten minutes late. The last time someone explained to you how to say that specific bad word in spanish or turkish. The last time you forgot completelly how that word was. The last time you watched a World Cup match. The last time you hugged.

As I am staying for the next semester, people say "But Marcus, you will meet other people to hug". Evidently. But among one hundred thousand foxes, only those who captivated me are important. Going to De Zolder might be, per se, an interesting experience, but does not come close to the experience of being there with your friends. With people that despite all the language difficulties created all those invisible connections. Those people you are going to look deep in the eyes and say that "goodbye" mixed with "see you soon", that crazy thing of knowing that life keeps going just the same, but we all go different.
And probably there is the originality of this thing. Because even though that happens all the time with so many people, it always feels like the first time we are suffering that very good kind of suffering, the suffering of those people who loved so hard and do not regret.

Frisbee

/* for english version, scroll down */

Me armei agora de corda de varal e fui-me pro parque.
Pus-me a escalar a árvore.

---

I know I have promised I would not use this blog as a diary, and if this is not the first time I am saying this probably I also have promised I would never again apologize about using the blog as a diary even having promised otherwise. Having exposed my knowledge of this fact, and the fact about the fact, I must say that some episodes simply can't go without being narrated and shared, however useless and unimportant they may seem, because to me they were important. One of these episodes is the one about the frisbee that got stuck in the tree.
Three weeks ago I and some friends went enjoying the good weather in Stadspark. This place is like the Redenção in Porto Alegre, but with less people. We found a glade to park our bikes and started playing with a frisbee we bought on the way there. It is not actually a frisbee, the purists might say, it is one of those with a hole in it, some sort of disc - if the nerd analogies are allowed, as the thing is yellow, it looked exactly like a Sonic's power ring.
Well, everybody knows that care and caution in almost any activity as times goes by give place to their ugly cousins neglect and irresponsible experimentation. And because of that the frisbee end up in a tree.
Before proceeding to the rest of the narrative, I believe is relevant some psychological contextualization.
I was born the third pregnancy of a couple that wanted very bad a baby. Due to health issues, the first two pregnancies did not worked out. Maybe for that, I was raised almost in a bubble. Yes, I played in the sand, got dirty a lot, but never did anything that was by any means dangerous, like going in any theme park toy that was not the bumper car (is it called like that in english?) or climbing a tree.
And then it comes to the next fact. I gathered all the nerve and will to fulfill that gap in my childhood, and climbed the tree. Nothing too spectacular, of course, in the second branch I stepped on I already could swing the branch where the frisbee was stuck and I could manage to get it. The score, then, was We 1 x 0 Frisbee.
This was not the whole history, it doesn't end there.
One week later we repeated everything, now with a barbecue and more friends. Again, time passed and with it the caution, next thing we know is that the frisbee is stuck again to (another) tree. This time much higher, totally impossible to climb there. It was a sunday. We stayed there until the wee hours (like 8pm, high sun still: this meridian thing is too much for my time notion), throwing branches trying to get the frisbee to fall, but nothing. We 1 x 1 Frisbee.
The day after, and the day after that, we came back to the park but again with no success. One could think that in a place flat like the Netherlands the wind is strong, but apparently it is so only when is against you and you are tired of riding your bike. We made some further visits, in one of them a dutch couple even tried to helpe me throw dead tree pieces in the alive tree, but even them having much better aiming skills than I do, we did not succeeded. The score to that time was already like We 1 x 4 Frisbee.
Evidently (increasingly) losing, we gave it some time. We went taking care of our lives. But a sequence of events injected me the motivation I was lacking. I solved a Program Correctness task much before the due date, we went to Tropkillaz show in the Haarlem, we got a lot of FourSquare points because of that, I finished reading a Paul Erdös' biography, I juggled in the park; this hits sequence gave me the urge to try the next. I drank a coffee and armed myself with a rope and went straight to the park.
The coffee and the persistence were essential for the success of the operation, as much as the rope. For about one hour, I kept throwing at the tree a stick tied to the rope, trying to hook the tree in such a way I could swing the branch where the frisbee was this time. I developed pratically a science of retrieving flying toys, everything calculated to maximize the precision of the throws and minimize the damage to the poor tree. At some moment I made the frisbee fall for 3 meters. Where it was now would make much harder to get to it using the rope technique, I was running out of daylight, and the desperate situation was asking for a desperate measure. I got myself climbing the tree.
I, the straight-laced kid who never broke a bone in his entire life, hanging from a tree at at least 6 meters from the ground trying to get back the lost frisbee. I would not dare to go any higher, but the frisbee was still out of my 170cm range. But, as a surprise generosity of chance, right beside me at the distance of a stretched arm was a broken branch that I used to fish the damned frisbee. Moments of pressure went by as I was trying to take the frisbee from the tree to the ground, but when I saw the frisbee finally laying on the grass I heard, in the backgroung of my mind, the triumph song of Airton Senna (pa-pa-paaa, pa-pa-paaa...). I descended from the tree with the sound of imaginary applauses.

It comes a time to a guy's life when he has to decide whether he's a man or he's a mouse. I could trace numerous parallels with other aspects of Life and Universe, abstract everything to a guy who doing new things he is not used to do, allowing himself to go beyond his comfortable limits, but I think this time I am just going to keep to the old and good Nature versus Man. Man versus Frisbee.

I am all scratched, whacked from throwing things at the tree, but what the hell, I got the frisbee back.

Tot ziens!

Koningsdag

/* for english version, scroll down */

Writing has some challenges that the writer has to deal with alone. The text must have coherence, preferably with ideas that chain and complement each other naturally. The introduction, however, has yet another peculiarity that is having to connect the Nothing to the subject of which the writer wants to write about. Among other things, that's why this post is going to address the Koningsdag.
To those who doesn't know what the heck is the Koningsdag, the way I didn't know before getting here, the basic idea is as follows: once upon a time there was a pricess' birthday, that at some moment became a national party (the birthday, not the princess), and later when she became a queen (the princess, not the day) and therefore (the day) received the name Koninginnedag (Queen's Day). The queen throne's successor queens (does this phrase make any sense?) kept the date, which continued having the purpose of observing the queen's birthdate. Until last year, when the Queen Wilhelmina abdicated the throne in favour of her son, Willem-Alexander. Therefore, 2014 was the first year ever to have a Koningsdag (King's Day).
The Koningsdag is the day in which theoretically dutch people celebrate the fact they have a king, drinking to his royal health. On practice, though, it's the day in which dutch people remember of the existence of the king and they and the immigrants that perchance are in Netherlands or that specially came here for the party drink to the king's health, the queen's, the bishop's, the knight's, the rook's and even to health of each one of the 8 pawns.
For that, specially on this date it is allowed to drink alcoholic beverages in the streets (yes: the mushroom's and weed's use allowing country also does not allow to drink alcohol in the streets, shocking huh?) and many stands selling it are assembled in the sidewalks. Another exception is made relating to any other kind of good: anyone may go to the streets and sell whatever they want to, no need to have a license or something for that. The people that wants to do that usually gather in some sort of an impromptu "camelodromo" (very famous places in Brazil, where all kinds of crap are sold), and joyfully celebrate the king's life, the freedom, and the profit - specially the last one.
Every city in the Netherlands have something prepared for this day. Here in Groningen were set up stages for bands at Vismarkt and Grote Markt; between them there was another one, smaller, just for DJ's. I've heard about other things going on on the rest of the city, but these ones I didn't participate of.
Actually, because of all the drinking tents and bands, the party itself resembles to Estancia Velha's Kerb (Kerb is a kind of festival that takes place in some southern brazilian cities with a strong germanic culture), even the songs! They played a lot of the so-called (called so by us, brazilian people) "bandinha" music, but in dutch, of course.
In the weeks preceding the Koningsdag, also, the whole city got adorned and were created a lot of sales with the recurring ideas of "be a king!", on the men article shops, "choose your own king!", on the women article shops, and "Happy Easter!" on the coffeeshops (jk). What was everywhere, though, was the orange color. After all, orange is the national color, is the color of the dutch football team, of the bank I use here, my kitchen's color, is the color of Van Gogh's beard, is the color of that citric fruit that matches perfectly a shot of Southern Comfort and, moreover, it's the color of insanity.

They say Brazilian Carnival is the biggest street party in the world, but after this Koningsdag I got skeptic about that. Here in Groningen it was already awesome, the square was crowded even though was raining; in Amsterdam it must have been unbelievable.

// Ready to go, but I don't have orange pants.

// Malitos Team, just sane and serious people from Albertine plus some friends.

// In another point of the party, the Zuera's Team. Because brazilian people are fucked up.
Tot ziens!
